What we are looking for

As part of the bioinformatics team, the Bioinformation’s core activity is maintaining, deploying, and running the GEiGS® BioCompute software ( The GEiGS® technology uses genome-editing to redirect RNA-silencing genes (e.g. miRNAs) to novel targets, including pests and pathogens, to develop disease-resistant plants and novel traits! In terms of maintenance, this will include QA testing and implementation of improvements. Deployment consists of preparing code and data ready to run on the cluster. Running GEiGS® BioCompute involves monitoring and troubleshooting live running instances of the software. In close contact with the Project Managers who provide the run input details and the GEiGS® Biologists who perform the output QC, the Bioinformatician plays a pivotal role in delivering high-quality data on time.


We are looking for someone with an engineering mindset: someone who is used to monitoring the progress of complex processes, who pays attention to detail, identifies problems, and is persistent in investigating anomalies.



Key Responsibilities

  • Run and monitor GEiGS® BioCompute instances
  • Support the GEiGS® team in analyzing and interpreting GEiGS® BioCompute results
  • Contribute to the maintenance and development of the GEiGS® BioCompute
  • Contribute to the development and improvement of good practices
  • Design QA tests (including the generation of test data)
  • Support other bioinformaticians through code review and peer coding




  • BSc/MSc in software engineering/development and 3+ years of experience in bioinformatics/genomic analysis
    BSc/MSc in bioinformatics and 2+ years of experience in bioinformatics/genomic analysis


  • Proficient with Python OR familiarity with Python and proficient in another language
  • Familiarity with pipeline management approaches (such as CWL, SnakeMake, NextFlow or others)
  • Familiarity with cloud computing environments



  • Familiarity with scrum agile working
  • Knowledge of other scripting languages (Perl, Bash)
  • Knowledge of R
  • Experience with genomic data and NGS data

  • Job Location– This position can be either remote within the UK, fully based in our Norwich office or a combination of both.
