About Tropic Biosciences

Tropic Biosciences is a biotechnology company focused on utilizing advanced plant breeding and gene editing technologies to develop high-performing commercial varieties of tropical crops which promote cultivation efficiencies, enhance consumer health, and improve sustainable environmental practices, using cutting edge genetic editing technologies. Tropic’s vision is to become a leading seed business with significant ownership of its products from the laboratory to the field, while maintaining constructive relationships with growers and consumers based on transparency and trust.

What we are looking for

The Company is looking for a qualified Research Scientist I to oversee the execution of routine to technically diverse and challenging assignments required to characterize all gene edited plant material. The role will sit within the Molecular Biology Team developing high throughput genotyping pipelines and implementing new technologies and approaches alongside the Genotyping Lead – key to delivering critical data to reach project milestones.

The successful candidate will be a gene editing expert (from a plant, animal or human biology background) within the molecular biology group, responsible for advising, designing, and troubleshooting gene editing strategy design in new iterations of our pipelines. Strong experience with diverse genotyping technologies is a must, as the candidate will primarily consult, prepare, and supervise the execution of all aspects of our DNA-based molecular (genotyping) analysis: assay design, assay establishment, experimental set up, interpretation of results, troubleshooting, and coordination of services with external providers. The position also involves assisting the Genotyping Lead in managing a small team of research technicians to drive decisions on resourcing across a complex portfolio of projects, while ensuring that strict adherence to our internal specifications and standards is maintained.

Key responsibilities held by this function will include:

  • To develop and consult on novel gene editing strategies and genotyping technologies to improve our product development pipeline
  • To develop novel strategies and improvements to implement in the genotyping pipelines
  • To lead small-scale troubleshooting and assay development projects for genotyping processes
  • To interpret and present results to internal clients and recommend course of action (if applicable)
  • To curate databases, perform analysis of metadata and compile reports of trends (gene editing efficiencies), findings (optimal approaches) and suggestions for improvements (to targeting/selection strategy etc)
  • To align with Genotyping and Team Lead on the consultation and management of internal genotyping pipelines (planning, task allocation, follow up on their progress, quality control, costing, resourcing)
  • To update, troubleshoot and QC day-to-day operations to ensure high quality deliverables of selected projects and improve our processes
  • To perform bench work and data analysis as required
  • To check and sign off all records (databases and laboratory e-notebooks) updated by the technicians assigned to their selected projects
  • To ensure cleanliness, order, and lack of contamination within the genotyping spaces
  • To support the development and implementation of QC and assurance processes including traceable laboratory records, raw data/stocks storage, and databases

Qualification, knowledge, and key skills required

  • PhD in a relevant field (Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, Cellular Medicine, Biotechnology, Biochemistry or closely related field)
  • Direct, broad, hands-on experience with the design and analysis of several gene editing strategies and technologies
  • Direct experience with molecular biology and/or genotyping processes (from gDNA/RNA extractions through to data analysis)
  • Expert in the design, implementation and analysis of genotyping assays (qPCR, dPCR, TaqMan, PCR)
  • Experience with diverse sequencing technologies
  • Excellent organization skills
  • Strong and clear written and oral communication skills to allow the exchange of information with people representing a wide diversity of disciplines and levels within the organization
  • Proficient in working with Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • Ability to handle large datasets and parallel work
  • Fluent in English – speaking and writing
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, multi-tasked environment while consistently maintaining a positive and professional attitude
  • Good team player, strong execution, and flexibility to handle changes

Desirable skills

  • Experience with bioinformatic analysis of sequencing highly desirable
  • Industry experience (start-up) highly desirable
  • Basic line management experience
  • Experience with Python, design, and implementation of programs for data mining

Additional Information

  • Job Location – Norwich UK
  • Time Requirement - Full time position
  • Compensation – We offer a competitive compensation package to successful candidates
  • Benefits – 25 days annual leave, Private Medical Insurance through Vitality, 4% employer contribution to pension, day to day cash back off of medical expenses, Group Income protection scheme, good learning and training opportunities, social events throughout the year.
