What we are looking for

We are looking for a Laboratory Technician within our Molecular Team to execute characterization of all gene edited plant material from both plant product development pipelines and experimental approaches, in a timely and accurate manner. In addition, the Laboratory Technician will also be involved in all aspects of construct development for our plant product development pipelines, including cloning of plasmids, sourcing and organizing stocks. The job holder will carry out essential general molecular biology tasks to support the Molecular Biology Genotyping and Cloning Pipelines under close supervision and direction from our expert team of scientists. The scope of this role would involve crucial development of our genotyping and cloning capabilities, with the potential for significant impact within Tropic Biosciences through the implementation of novel gene editing approaches and analyses.


Key Responsibilities

  • Support the Molecular Biology Support Services as needed (e. g. primer design, DNA/RNA extraction, qPCR, PCR, SOP development)
  • Support the team in all genotyping and cloning projects and adhere to rigorous workflows and SOPs (coordinate work with line manager)
  • Support outsourcing of genotyping pipelines
  • Perform all genotyping steps (from gDNA/RNA extractions through to data analysis)
  • Perform key support tasks such as plasmid purification, making competent cells, etc
  • Perform general housekeeping of the laboratories as required to ensure high quality standards are met
  • Report any issues to line manager or Team Lead
  • Follow instructions, either verbally directed or from scientific resources and SOPs
  • Ensure that all records (databases and laboratory e-notebooks) are up to date


Requirements

Essential

  • Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Biochemistry, Genetics, Biological Sciences or related field
  • Basic practical experience in general molecular biology techniques (cloning, PCR, DNA/RNA extraction, PCR processes, agarose gels, etc.)
  • Detailed and accurate record keeping
  • Willingness to learn and to deliver
  • Good communication and time management skills
  • Proficient in working with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • Great ability to work in a fast-paced, multi-tasked environment while consistently maintaining a positive and professional attitude
  • Excellent organization skills
  • Fluent in English – speaking and writing

Desirable

  • Experience of Molecular Biology in a professional environment (academia or industry) 
  • Experience with Molecular Biology programs such as Snapgene, Geneious
