What we are looking for

We are seeking an In-house Patent Attorney to join our growing Intellectual Property department. This is a unique opportunity to become a core member of the IP team, reporting directly to the VP of Intellectual Property, and have a substantial impact on the company’s IP strategy and growing patent portfolio.

The Patent Attorney will be responsible for all IP aspects relating to Tropic’s Technology Development (TechDev) teams. The TechDev teams develop technologies which are used within Tropic but are also licensed out to third parties. We are therefore looking for a commercially oriented patent attorney who will be able to have a detailed understanding of innovations developed within the TechDev teams, translate these innovations into valuable IP assets and support commercialisation of these innovations. To achieve these goals, the successful candidate will work closely with both scientists and business teams and have direct access to relevant members of the senior management team.

The Patent Attorney will enjoy working in a fast-paced, multi-cultural company, and will have significant responsibility for creating and exploiting commercially valuable IP assets, leading patent prosecution and supporting decision makers within the company.

Key Responsibilities

  • You will have a detailed understanding of the scientific developments within the TechDev teams and become the contact person for all IP matters relating to those teams.
  • You will be responsible for identifying and proactively actioning all IP matters within the Technology Development teams, including invention mining, identifying requirements for FTO analyses, supporting commercial agreements relating to innovations developed within the Technology Development teams etc.
  • You will liaise directly with R&D teams, project managers and external collaborators to identify inventions and determine how best to protect them.
  • You will support drafting and filing of patent applications, including instructing the R&D teams on experimental work required to support filing and working closely with outside counsel to coordinate drafting and filing strategy.
  • You will manage global prosecution of the TechDev patent portfolio and coordinate prosecution strategy with external counsels.
  • You will provide strategic and commercial advice to the senior management team based on IP analysis.



  • D. in biology, specialising in Genetics / Molecular Biology / RNA biology / Gene Editing / Gene Silencing / Plant Biology / Bioinformatics or adjacent fields.
  • A proactive self-starter with an ability to independently initiate projects and take ownership of them.
  • Agile and enjoys a fast-paced, fast-changing environment.
  • A strong communicator, able to clearly and succinctly relay complex information to colleagues across a breadth of backgrounds and functions within the company.
  • Qualified Patent Attorney (European/UK/US, candidates qualified in other jurisdictions may be considered).
  • Experience in coordinating international patent prosecution across multiple jurisdictions.
  • Experience in patent drafting.


  • Prior in-house experience (ideally in a Life Science/Biotechnology company) – Big advantage.
  • Experience in supporting contentious matters (opposition, litigation etc).
